COFFEE - A GREAT HIT FOR YOUR BRAIN

Ever had a coffee conversation?

If you’re a coffee drinker, you know all the REASONS why coffee is your favourite, and why it’s so good for you.
If you’re not, you have research that backs up that as well. And understandably, benefits are praised one day and side effects and disadvantages the next. Let’s have a look at some of the research. It can just come down to how much you drink, or how good the coffee is.

Drink "Good Coffee"

Most of the latest research says that coffee, good coffee, is a great asset to the brain.

It’s what we call a neuroprotectant, meaning it protects the neurons or communicating systems of the brain.

Research further says that the caffeine in coffee helps to boost brain health.

However, Studies indicate that decaf coffee does not have the same protective effects on your brain, so don’t compromise if you don’t have to.

Interesting Facts from Studies

Coffee is very high in anti-oxidants, along with blueberries and pomegranates. Anti-oxidants protect your body from oxidative stress and help lower your risks for many age-related diseases.  Adding turmeric to your morning “JOE” gives it an even stronger punch.

It can slow down cognitive issues like dementia because caffeine can disrupt adenosine. Adenosine is a cell chemical that can start a chain reaction that leads to a disruption of neuron function, and neurodegeneration.

Results from a number of studies found that “caffeine intake was associated with a significantly lower risk for Alzheimer’s disease.  Some studies have even said that coffee and caffeine may lower the risk of Parkinson’s disease and can also reduce tremors.
Coffee is reported to boost long term memory and stimulate the central nervous system by promoting the release of neurotransmitters, especially noradrenaline, dopamine and serotonin

It makes you feel great. It also helps with concentration and focus, especially for people who struggle to pay attention, particular those on the spectrum

Interesting Research Questions and Andswers

Is caffeine linked to high blood pressure and is it a risk factor for heart health?

The effect is quite minimal, especially for long term coffee drinkers. Coffee can in fact lower stroke and heart attack risk.

Is caffeine good for weight loss?

Caffeine is known to boost energy and increase adrenaline which helps with physical performance.
This can assist with fat burning, weight loss and boosting metabolism. It is also reported to help you live longer, and make you feel physically well, especially for women.

Does coffee promote cancer?

Coffee lowers cancer risk, probably because of its antioxidant properties as well as lowering the risk for diabetes type 2.
Coffee itself helps to increase liver enzymes, making it protective to the liver and supporting it.

It is important to know that there are a few downsides to coffee, that make it less tolerable.

Unfortunately, some people are very sensitive to caffeine.  Coffee can increase the risk of anxiety, especially if someone has a tendency to be nervous, or jittery.

Caffeine works by stimulating your nervous system and anxiety can be the result of this overstimulation. Long term overstimulation can bring adrenal fatigue, a result of overuse rather than the coffee itself.

There are reports of difficulty sleeping, either broken sleep or insomnia at night, because of the energy boosts that come with caffeine. Coffee later in the day can be switched with a decaf, rather than stopping the enjoyment of the coffee.

Coffee is also mildly addictive and can cause fatigue, irritability or headaches if suddenly stopped. It is known to trigger digestive problems with a few people, especially if they have reflux issues, heartburn etc. and can cause stomach pains or nausea in severe cases.

An important thing to note – some commercial brands of coffee contain a variety of toxins, especially Mycotoxins (a type of mold) that contaminate the coffee, causing inflammation in the body. Be careful where you purchase your coffee, check out where the beans come from, so you are getting the best of the benefits and not the toxic load.

Research tells us that 2 or 3 cups of good coffee a day, will give you the best in benefits – so enjoy
